CHICAGO (WLS) — Six people were injured after a shooting inside a Bronzeville Jewel grocery store Tuesday morning, Chicago police and fire officials said. Two suspects entered a Jewel at the Lake Meadows Shopping Center in the 400-block of East 34th Street just before 11 a.m. and took merchandise, police said.

When they tried to leave, a 46-year-old man intervened, police said.

One of the suspects opened fire, hitting the man and two others who were nearby, CPD said.

The 46-year-old was shot, and taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition.

A 29-year-old woman was shot in the foot, and taken to UChicago, where she remains stable. Chicago fire officials said she was in serious condition, as well.

A 67-year-old woman suffered a graze wound to the foot. She declined medical treatment.

Chicago fire officials said two people were injured running away, as well. And one suffered an unrelated injury.

No one is in custody; Chicago police are investigating.

Chopper 7 was over the scene about 11:45 a.m.

Several Chicago police squad cars could be seen. There was also crime scene tape blocking the entrance.

Kimberly Anthony said she was about to check out when she heard the security guard struggling with someone, and then saw the injured guard on the ground.

“There was blood everywhere. Then, one of the cashiers got in her foot, and she was losing a lot of blood,” Anthony said. “The security people are really good people, and I love him. And to see him down on the floor like that, it really hurts me. This is a good store and all of the workers are good people.”

Nearby residents were shaken by the violence in broad daylight.

“It’s early in the morning. It’s a grocery store, a lot of people in there just trying make ends meet. So what do you possible doing, going in there shooting up the place for?” Terrell Standberry said.

“I saw everyone standing out, saw one of employees, and they actually mentioned that someone got shot inside the store,” resident James Poole said.

City Fashion, the store next to Jewel, installed a doorbell for customers to ring, after several rounds of people stealing merchandise.

“I feel really upset; that’s why we have the alarm system on the door,” City Fashion Owner Hak Kim said.

“That was very bold of that people, and I hope the doesn’t ever happen again,” City Fashion Manager CC Coats said.
